What’s Coming Next for Acura? A Look at the Brand’s Future SUV Plans

Acura isn’t standing still. In fact, the next few years could bring some of the biggest changes to the lineup in quite a while.
Acura recently outlined plans for three new SUVs, including an adventure-focused model, an all-new RDX Hybrid, and an even larger SUV with seating for eight. That means the brand is getting ready to move into some territory it hasn’t really occupied before. Here’s what we know so far.
A New Adventure-Ready Acura SUV
First up is an entirely new SUV expected in the first part of 2028. Acura describes it as an “adventure-ready” model, which immediately makes it sound different from the current ADX, RDX, and MDX lineup. Details are still limited, but the idea of a more outdoors-focused Acura is interesting.
There are plenty of drivers who want something upscale but still want to carry camping gear, head down a gravel road, or deal with bad weather without thinking twice about it. An Acura aimed directly at that kind of buyer could fill a pretty obvious gap.
The RDX Is Going Hybrid
The bigger news might be what’s happening with the next RDX. Acura says the fourth-generation RDX will arrive in 2028 with a two-motor hybrid-electric system. It will be the first Acura to use this particular hybrid setup, and the company is also developing an electric all-wheel-drive unit.
That sounds promising because the RDX has never really been about chasing maximum fuel economy. It’s built around responsive performance and a sporty feel. A well-executed hybrid system could add efficiency while giving the electric motors a role in acceleration and all-wheel-drive performance.
In other words, hybrid doesn’t necessarily mean boring.
An Eight-Passenger Acura Is Coming Too
Acura also confirmed that its largest SUV ever is under development, with seating for eight passengers.
That could open the door for families who like the MDX but simply need more room. Right now, the MDX offers three-row seating for seven. An eight-passenger model would give Acura something for buyers who need maximum passenger space but still want the design, features, and driving feel that come with the brand.
There’s also a new V6 hybrid powertrain under development for larger Acura models, although Acura hasn’t laid out exactly where it will appear yet.
Plenty to Watch
We’re still a ways out from seeing these vehicles on the road, and a lot of details will come later. Still, the direction is pretty clear. Acura is expanding rather than simply replacing what it already has. In the meantime, the current Integra, ADX, RDX, and MDX lineup gives buyers several very different ways into the Acura brand.
