How Does Adaptive Cruise Control Work?

It’s been decades since Acura first introduced cruise control on their vehicles. Its widespread popularity meant virtually every Acura model since then has had cruise control. It simplifies the mundane part of driving — the constant rate of speed for long periods of time. More recently, it’s been upgraded to Adaptive Cruise Control. But what does that mean, and how does it work?

What is Adaptive Cruise Control?

When you’re travelling at a constant speed and approach a vehicle in your lane ahead of you, you have to tap the brakes to slow down. It disengages your Acura’s cruise control, and you have to reset or resume it once your lane is clear once again. Adaptive Cruise Control eliminates the need for braking when a slower vehicle is ahead of you. It modulates the speed you’re driving using input from a radar sensor on the front of your Acura.

How does do you use Adaptive Cruise Control

It’s quite simple, really. Just like a conventional cruise control system, you set your Acura’s Adaptive Cruise Control by pressing the ACC button on the steering wheel while cruising. It will prompt you for a follow distance: short, medium, or long interval. This is how close you’ll travel to the car in front of you. Don’t worry, Acuras compensate the distance for your rate of travel as well. Once you’ve set your speed between 20 and 95 miles per hour, you can easily adjust it with your steering wheel controls. The information display will tell you what speed your cruise control is set at. When you approach a slower vehicle ahead of your Acura, there’s no need to do anything. Your Acura will modulate the speed on its own to follow at a safe distance. Once the road ahead is clear, your Acura will resume its set speed. After you’ve come to a stop, all you have to do to resume the same speed and distance setting is tap the throttle. That’s it! Acura vehicles are among the most innovative and driver-centric vehicles on the road today. Combined with their luxurious interior, sexy looks, and outstanding features, there’s no time like now to get into an Acura.
